Shandong First Medical University & Shandong Academy of Medical Sciences (SDFMU), recognized as a key provincial institution and a "University Aiming to Join the Double First-Class Initiative" in the Shandong Provincial High-Level University Construction Project, is the largest medical research organization in Shandong Province. In 2025, SDFMU was recognized as a National Civilized Campus. It has more than 21,000 faculty members, medical professionals and staff, including three full-time academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 2 international academicians, 74 national-level talents, and 447 provincial and ministerial-level talents. It has one Huang Danian-style Teaching Team among national universities. Four faculty members have received the National Innovation Excellence Award, five have received the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Science and Technology Progress Award, and five have received the Shandong Provincial Highest Science and Technology Award. SDFMU has more than 5,000 staff with senior professional titles and more than 3,800 staff with doctoral degrees.
The Third Affiliated Hospital of Shandong First Medical University & Affiliated Hospital of Shandong Academy of Medical Sciences is a general hospital and clinical teaching hospital directly affiliated to SDFMU. It is a provincial Grade Ⅲ general hospital with distinctive specialty strengths, integrating medical care, scientific research, teaching, prevention and healthcare.
In August 2006, the former Shandong Provincial Hospital for Construction Workers was transferred as an entire entity to the administration of Shandong Academy of Medical Sciences and was integrated with the Affiliated Hospital of Shandong Academy of Medical Sciences to form the new “Affiliated Hospital of Shandong Academy of Medical Sciences”. In August 2019, it was renamed “The Third Affiliated Hospital of Shandong First Medical University (Affiliated Hospital of Shandong Academy of Medical Sciences)”. Shandong Provincial Hospital for Construction Workers was founded in 1953, while the predecessor of the Affiliated Hospital of Shandong Academy of Medical Sciences was founded in 1985. The hospital is located at No. 38 Wuyingshan Road, Tianqiao District, Jinan. It covers an area of 25,358.3 m², with a floor area of 51,639.05 m², 502 authorized beds and 618 open beds.

The hospital has a comprehensive range of disciplines. Its key and advantageous specialties include oncology, endocrinology, the Brain Center covering Neurology and Neurosurgery, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, Trauma Orthopedics, Hand and Foot Surgery, Cardiovascular Medicine, Gastrointestinal Surgery, Thoracic Surgery, Head, Neck and Breast Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Minimally Invasive Surgery, Hematology, Radiotherapy, Rehabilitation Medicine, and Traditional Chinese Medicine. The hospital has three provincial-level or higher key medical and health disciplines. Among them, Tuina is a high-level key discipline of Traditional Chinese Medicine designated by the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine; Oncology is among the first group of key medical and health disciplines in Shandong Province; and Endocrinology is a construction unit for key medical and health disciplines in Shandong Province. The hospital has one Shandong Provincial Key Laboratory for the Prevention and Treatment of Major Chronic Diseases in Medicine and Health and two Jinan municipal key laboratories. The technique of “Treating Cervical Spondylosis with Tendon-Regulating and Spine-Adjusting Manipulation” has been included in the second group of clinical advantageous technologies. The Department of Neurosurgery has obtained the qualification as a Neurosurgery Construction Center of the National Health Commission.
The hospital is the affiliated institution of the Institute of Gastroenterology (Clinical Center) of Shandong First Medical University and the Shandong Provincial Engineering Technology Research Center for Orthopedic Rehabilitation. It is a national colorectal cancer MDT demonstration unit, a Shandong provincial training base for new technologies in general surgery in health, and a designated service institution for labor capacity appraisal in Shandong Province. More than ten experts serve as vice chairpersons, standing committee members or committee members in national academic organizations such as the Chinese Medical Association, the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association, and the Chinese Society of Clinical Oncology. More than fifty experts serve as chairpersons or vice chairpersons in provincial academic organizations such as the Shandong Medical Association, Shandong Medical Doctor Association, Shandong Anti-Cancer Association, Shandong Research Hospital Association, and Shandong Health Management Association. The hospital has high-level talents including young experts of the Taishan Scholars Program, Qilu Health Leading Talents, Shandong Famous Traditional Chinese Medicine Experts, and Jinan “Haiyou Talents”. A number of staff members have been selected for talent programs such as the Shandong Provincial Health Innovation Team Construction Program, the Qilu Talent Project for Health Professionals, and the Young Talent Support Program. Several staff members have been honored as “Outstanding Cadres of Shandong Province for Responsibility and Dedication”, “Shandong Good Doctors”, “Top Ten Physicians of Shandong Province”, and “Outstanding Physicians of Shandong Province”.
The hospital’s medical equipment has reached an advanced level in China. It is equipped with a full range of high-end diagnostic and treatment facilities, including whole-body PET-CT, ECT, spiral CT, DSA, MRI, linear accelerators, radiotherapy simulators, high-definition endoscopes and surgical microscopes, providing strong support for clinical technological innovation, precision diagnosis and treatment, and the management of difficult, complex and critical diseases.
The hospital undertakes a number of projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Shandong provincial science and technology research programs, and the Natural Science Foundation of Shandong Province. As a rural doctor training base in Shandong Province, the hospital actively supports primary-level health assistance. In recent years, it has trained more than 5,000 primary care doctors and rural doctors, with online live-streamed training sessions receiving 4.93 million views. It has established the Shandong Alliance for Early Diagnosis and Treatment of Gastrointestinal Tumors, promoting technologies for the early diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal tumors across the province. Teaching work has been steadily enhanced. The hospital now has a professional teaching team of more than 200 members, over 80% of whom hold master’s degrees or above, and over 40% of whom hold senior professional titles. It provides clinical teaching for more than 300 trainees and interns each year.
The hospital provides overseas health examinations and medical examination services for immigration visa applicants from multiple countries. It is a designated medical examination institution in Shandong Province for visa-related physical examinations. At present, it mainly serves applicants to countries including Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Malaysia and Israel, providing pre-visa medical examination services for clients going abroad for study, family visits, work or immigration.
